The first failure was addressed by replacing the battery 100 kilometers from home, only to fail again at the exit ramp near home. Another battery would not do the trick this time and it had to be towed. Assumed alternator failure was the cause, but investigations proved to the contrary. Low engine compression was detected during diagnostic testing and my trustworthy mechanic suggests that a new engine may required. With 156,000 kilometers and the original timer belt never having been replaced, I'm told and the problems may be major such that it may not be worth repairing or even replacing the engine. The engine has yet to be opened. I'm not an auto techie, just a recently retired soul on minimal income who is desperate to fix the problem. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Before you go any further ( Diagnostic will only tell you of low compression it will not tell you the cause, which could be many reasons)...get a compression test done first on each cylinder, It could be just a valve or valves burnt out due to high mileage then all you will need is a topend overhaul, a lot cheaper than new engine.
I agree with Jon S ..... Big difference between battery and a total engine failure.
