I have a 93 Hyundai Excel. It is in pretty good shape for it's age and doesn't have a lot of miles. For various reasons, I am stuck with this car, so I'm looking for help keeping it running.

For about 3 years now, it has let out a puff of smoke when I first start it in the morning. Now, the smoking is getting a little worse.

Last winter, I had a day that it wouldn't start (or would start then die when I put it in gear). Had it towed to a mechanic who said he didn't have a problem starting it, but they would do a tune up for me. When I picked it up, he said it was starting to rattle.

So, now it rattles when I start it. Sometimes just for a second or two, sometimes I need to rev it a second to get it to stop. You can also hear a lesser rattle when I rev it. Furthermore, the oil light tends to go on and off and even flicker sometimes.

How bad is this? What should I do? Will it make it through a cold winter? What is the problem and what would it cost to fix?
