...650(I have a 2004 kia Optima). Typical? Also.. They said there is the possibility of internal damage. I have over 100,000 miles on my car. He said that since the car died before I started driving that the likelyhood of the car having damage is lower. What kind of damage could happen? Does internal damage happen often in cases like this? If so, how much more money am I looking at?

That sound like a typical charge for a timing belt change. I believe it's because of how difficult it is to get to in most cars. My husband was driving my Chevy Spectrum (Isuzu Imark) after we got a new car and neglected to have the timing belt checked at the recommended mileage. Needless to say since the car was 10 years old it was more to fix it ($4,000.00) then the car was worth ($1,000.00) so we scrapped it. It fried all the valves in the engine. I am glad that my current vehicle (Toyota Corolla) doesn't have a timing belt.
