noise and not turn over? On my way to work, I was slowing to a lower speed limit then continued driving when the car lost power and just stopped running. About 100ft passed when the dash lights turned on and I heard a grinding noise sounding like a muffler dragging. I pulled over to see if it had just lost fuel for a second, or hit water in the tank and attempted to restart it but the engine would not even turn over. Not even tap. Just dim the lights on the dash to nothing. So I know aside from driving the engine did not turn. It is a stick shift, and I did not downshift. However after I pulled off the road and did put it in Neutral to attempt a restart. The car will not run or turn to start. The battery is new and has plenty of charge. There are no odors coming from the engine cavity, and the is nothing hanging under the car.

well it could be a number of problems. you could have a broken push rod that fell into the crank case an picked up by the crank shaft an locked in to a cylinder wall, you could have a bent connecting rod or broken one. it could be a spun bearing, locking up the crank shaft do to no oil reaching the turning point between the crank shafter and connecting rod. or you have ran it out of oil and made the pistons lock up to the cylinder walls. there can be tons of problems but it sounds for sure like a motor problem. u can try droping the oil pan and see if anything falls out or if there is a spun bearing. note these are not compleat 100% accurate answers because of multipul things but i would say it could be one of the things that have caused it to loose power an lock up. most the time a spun bearing will cause loose of power an possible lock up

get ready for this!
if the cars timing belt was not replaced at 60K.
your timing belt snapped!
try using a socket and place it at the cranckshaft bolt, now try to turn the engine clockwise, if it doen't budge try counter clockwise, if it moves some, try again clockwise if the engine turns a bit and get stuck
this is a sample of what is lurking inside your engine

Yes a 2004 Rio 5. and that is going to set you back $1,500 for a used engine + labor for a car that is worth that much in good running conditions.
sorry for the bad news.
if you are one of the lucky ones and your car was built AFTER June 2005 you can slap a Hyundai Accent engine in there, that is IF you can find one cheaper than $1,500
